Trunks (トラムクス, Torankusu) is a character in the Dragon Ball Z anime series. He is the eldest son of Vegeta and Bulma. He is the eldest son of Vegeta and Bulma from an alternate timeline. This Trunks was raised under the influence of his father, a Saiyan prince, and trained since childhood to become a powerful fighter in a world apart from his future counterpart (Future Trunks).
He was also an important fighter in the war against Majin Boo, and his popularity among fans of the saga made Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, realize his importance in the story. Before we get to the guide of this character, you must first understand and remember that Dragon Ball has three timelines (as shown in 5 if we include those of Dragon Ball Super!), all of which have played an important role in Trunks’ story. WHO IS TRUNKS?
Trunks was born in the Dragon Ball universe in 766 AD. He is the offspring of Vegeta, a well-known Saiyan prince, and Bulma, who was Goku’s girlfriend. Technically, he is the prince of the Saiyans and third in line to the throne behind his father, Vegeta, and his uncle Tarble.
Since the death of King Vegeta, Trunks has grown up as an only child. His birth was not enough to reunite Vegeta and Bulma, who preferred to continue training to defeat the androids rather than raise their child. Therefore, he was raised by Bulma and her family for most of his life after the Cell arc. After the Cell saga, Vegeta became more involved in Trunks’ upbringing, frequently training with him and encouraging him to reach greater heights.
PERSONALITY OF TRUNKS
This Trunks was formed after the peaceful period of his childhood. As a result, he has become very different from his future self, Trunks from the future. He is, however, extremely spoiled and mischievous. Despite this, he has redeeming qualities like fighting to protect those he loves.
He has, however, inherited his father’s impulsive ego and does not take his rivals seriously (with the exception of Goten). He also inherited Vegeta’s pride on an almost subliminal level, which was demonstrated when he fell while trying to walk as a young child and didn’t even whimper, which is exceptional for most newborns. He is also very bright like his mother, who was born 8 years before him.
Trunks is a very young boy who was raised by Goten and Trunks. He often looks up to Vegeta for approval, and he frowns whenever Vegeta is not around. He also has a warm relationship with Son Goten, Goku’s son. They are close companions throughout their childhood, whether they fight or play together.
Trunks’ psychological development is also visible throughout the series. When he was young, he was too attached to his father and wanted to fight stronger people despite warnings about their strength. As Goten and Trunks team up to form Gotenks, this character trait will be further emphasized.
APPEARANCE OF TRUNKS
Trunks’ most distinctive physical traits are found on his mother’s side of the family. Trunks inherited his purple hair and blue eyes from Bulma, as well as Vegeta’s complexion. He has a stern but confident demeanor, as well as Vegeta’s complexion.
When he becomes a Super Saiyan, his eyes become green and have no pupils, his hair becomes blond and he bristles like the Saiyans. He wears a dark green kimono with an orange belt and bracelets. As for his shoes, he usually wears golden boots.
TRUNKS IN DRAGON BALL Z
SAGA CELL
Trunks was born two years after the advent of Trunks of the Future in Dragon Ball Z. To warn the Z-fighters of an impending android threat that had already destroyed a significant portion of the planet through his friend Gohan in an alternate reality, his alternate version made his debut. Despite this warning, the Z-Warriors had to take it easy until they arrived. Vegeta had little involvement in Trunks’ education during this time.
The androids arrived on the day of their arrival, when Bulma introduced Trunks to Goku’s team. They then confront Dr. Gero’s creations, C-19 and C-20, and Piccolo reveals the identity of Trunks from the future as his son’s future counterpart to Vegeta and then to Bulma, who is relieved to learn that Trunks will not grow up to look like his father. Later in the story, after Cell’s defeat, Trunks begins to walk, and Vegeta begins to take an active interest in his education.
MAJIN BOO SAGA
7 years after Cell’s defeat at the Cell Games, Trunks is going to play a more significant role in the history of Dragon Ball Z. He is now 8 years old and has a huge strength for his age thanks to the intense training of his father in the gravity chamber. He will even surpass Goten, Goku’s son and closest friend, in strength.
Trunks is disappointed to be sent to the junior category of the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament (Tenkaichi Budokai), and he easily qualifies for the grand final. After defeating his oldest friend Sangoten, the second son of Sangoku, Trunks becomes the new junior champion. When Trunks challenges Mr. Satan, a light tap from him is enough to send Mr. Satan out of the ring, giving Trunks the victory in this fight. The audience, on the other hand, believes that Mr. Satan was sincerely nice to Trunks when he did it intentionally.
Trunks convinces Goten to compete in the adult division under the name Mighty Mask, but Android 18 finds out and destroys their cover with a Destructo disk during the fight, disqualifying them and forcing the boys to flee.
Trunks and Goten go to the battle site after hearing about Majin Boo from Videl. Piccolo and Krilin are turned to stone by Dabra, whom Trunks inadvertently injures. Trunks thinks he has killed Piccolo after seeing that he is back to normal, so he asks Goten to keep the secret. He is shocked when Piccolo survives before Vegeta arrives to fight Majin Buu.
Trunks quickly understands that Vegeta can’t win, so he will try to help his father in the fight against the beast. Trunks rushes in and saves Vegeta as Majin Boo torments him. For his own safety, Vegeta orders Trunks to flee, but Trunks refuses and wants to stay to help his father fight Majin Boo; however, he and Goten are knocked out by Vegeta. The girls sit in the gazebo with Trunks, who was badly injured by his opponent. When they wake up, Trunks and the others learn that Vegeta and Gohan have died. Goku explains the fusion dance, which will allow them to defeat Majin Buu, but Trunks is skeptical.
Babidi informs the world that if Goten, Trunks and Piccolo don’t come out of hiding, they will destroy other areas. To get the Dragon Radar, Trunks will have to run to the Capsule Corporation as fast as he can. Goku will then fight Babidi and Majin Boo after Trunks has left and transformed into Super Saiyan 3. Goku will then demonstrate his fusion dance to them before transforming into SSJ3 for the first time in the anime. However, with Goku’s stay on Earth over, Piccolo has to instruct the boys for the rest of the dance. Then Piccolo and Krilin take over as instructors for the kids’ fusion dance.
Piccolo states that Goten and Trunks’ first attempt fails because Trunks made a mistake with his fingers. Their second attempt also fails because their index fingers don’t touch, much to Piccolo’s dismay as he notes the failed attempts. The third attempt succeeds in training Gotenks, who then rushes towards Majin Boo to fight him but is quickly destroyed. They separate after some training and then reunite, but as Gotenks wastes time playing, they disarm each other before fighting Majin Buu, the fusion lasting only half an hour.
Trunks and Goten are on their way to the hyperbolic time chamber to train when Super Boo shows up at the gazebo. Piccolo warns them that Super Boo will arrive in a minute, giving them six hours of training in the chamber. Later, Super Boo and Piccolo enter, but since they are Gotenks instead of Gotenks, they are unable to defeat him. When Gotenks pretends to be tired and weary, Piccolo razes the entrance to the chamber, but Super Boo escapes before consuming the remaining Z-fighters.
Gotenks is able to escape thanks to his Super Saiyan 3 form, and he faces the pink villain once again. Gotenks deceives the Super Boo and absorbs them to become stronger. But when Kid Buu uses the Planet Burst attack on Earth, Trunks is killed as well as Goten, Piccolo and Gohan while Kid Buu uses the Planet Burst attack and destroys the planet. Trunks is brought back to life by the Namekian crystal balls and lends energy to Goku’s Super Spirit Bomb when Vegeta asks everyone for power. Trunks and his friends return to Kami-Sama’s palace, where they are soon joined by Vegeta, Goku, Mr. Buu, Dende and Mr. Satan after Kid Buu is destroyed.
TRUNKS & GOTEN: A FAITHFUL FRIENDLINESS
Goten will be a great support for Trunks in the future, which is not negligible from Toriyama’s point of view. The fact that Goten is Sangoku’s son reminds us of the strong friendship that has developed between him and Vegeta over time. They were raised with fighting in mind, playing many fighting games and testing their strength. These trainings are beneficial in increasing their power significantly compared to the previous human-saiyan hybrids seen at this age.
DANCE OF THE FUSION BETWEEN TRUNKS AND GOTEN
Goten and Trunks perform the Fusion Dance in DBZ, which is a strange but exciting form of fusion. It gives Gotenks’ obnoxious and haughty character. We see him fighting powerful opponents and reaching Super Saiyan 2 and 3 states to compete with the most violent ones in the anime. But we should not forget that in Dragon Ball, most of the fusions have a very short lifespan, which has an impact on the length of their fight.
HOW LONG DOES THE FUSION DANCE LAST?
The Fusion Dance for Gotenks lasts about 50 minutes in its most frequent cases, with many exceptions and anomalies throughout the saga.
TRANSFORMATION OF TRUNKS
SUPER SAIYAN
The Super Saiyan form has become considerably easier for Trunks to attain and master, largely due to his DNA and the fact that he has a large number of S-cells in his body. Trunks reached the SSJ stage at the age of eight, just like his future self. He was the first character to use it in the series, when he transformed during his father Vegeta’s training. He was amazed at how easy it was for a child to transform.
The energy expended during the transformation causes the character’s hair to stand up and turn golden. Trunks’ eyes turn from blue to a bright emerald green. Power increases dramatically for Trunks in this state, and he is much stronger than his closest companion, Goten. Trunks has demonstrated an impressive ability to adapt in extremely low gravity environments. Unlike his father, Trunks never seemed to become more aggressive, proud or eager to fight while transforming. He kept his typical personality while undergoing the change.
TRUNK TECHNIQUES
Trunks has accumulated over thirty techniques and skills that put his father, Vegeta, to shame since birth, due to his incredible power from his Saiyan heritage and genes. The following are the most amazing:
FUSION DANCE
A fusion is formed by a short sequence of poses performed by two characters of similar power levels and size. To succeed, the poses must be performed in a perfectly symmetrical image. The result is a superior being (in this case, Gotenks) whose power is multiplied by that of the individual characters. If the dance is not done properly, it will result in an overweight or underweight character.
DOUBLE BUSTER
Trunks raises both his arms and changes his ki. He then spreads his arms in front of him and throws a blast of golden energy at the opponent, which causes a lot of damage.
BIG TREE CANNON
In the anime, Gotenks starts with a pair of golden energy balls forming in his hands. Then, he brings his arms in front of him and extends his fingertips outwards like a child pretending to use a gun, and fires a big golden energy beam at the opponent, causing great damage.
KAMÉHAMÉA
It is no longer demonstrated. Trunks undoubtedly knows the Kamehamaha method, and he will combine it with Goten to create a highly destructive attack.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRUNKS AND TRUNKS OF THE FUTURE
The differences between Trunks’ childhood in the future and the original Trunks’ childhood are significant. For example, his counterpart in the future had to witness the murder of everyone he cared about, while he was unable to fight the androids. Trunks’ youth was carefree and carefree, with the exception of his father’s absence during his studies. The two Trunks meet when the time-traveling future Trunks returns to the reality of his youthful self to warn of the androids that want to destroy the planet. The Z-fighters would not have been as well equipped to fight them without his help, so he is a crucial character in the rest of the story.
STORIES ABOUT TRUNKS
- Trunks is the first half-Saiyan (like Gohan) to be seen without a tail. However, unlike the previous cases, his lack of a tail was mentioned in chapter 337 of the Dragon Ball Z manga, when Krilin asked if she had cut it or not. In episode 2 of Dragon Ball Super season 1, Trunks tells Android 18 that he has never had a tail before.Android 18 – What do you mean “had”? Trunks – I’ve never had a tail before now!
The name comes from a pun on the word “boxers.” - While Trunks has long been associated with lavender hair in the anime and manga, the concept art for Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods depicts him with blue hair. This corresponded more to the color of his mother in the series.
- His hair will later be presented in blue in Dragon Ball Super, alongside Trunks from the future, which adds to the confusion about his color.
